This must have been the week with the "biggest ever" blitz of Wii hardware at TRU and WalMart, eh?
Its scary that Nintendo's record March was just them getting back to normal after Xmas, and now April should be the start of production boosts for the new fiscal year.

Great boost for PS3 & 360. Fantastic numbers all around. 360 does steal the majority of the GTA audience but PS3 still outsells it hardware-wise. 1 win for both camps.
GTAIV & MKWii both have fantastic launches in the same week. That's gotta be a sign the market is growing.

1. HW all around up with it's SW - incredible stuff, usually HW jumps from this kind of game will come in increased volume over time. Having this much increase for PS3 and Xbox 360 for the first week says a LOT about how much it will gain in the long run.
2. Wii HW is incredible - if it's correct it puts Wii above 800k for this month and it's a 4 week month. 700k last month for NPD was a 5 week month... Absolutely INSANE that's almost the weekly level of November last year... is it possible that Nintendo are going to try and sell at Christmas volume all year round and then pump out 2 or 3 million in December this year??? Fark me drunk... it's just getting bigger.
3. GTAIV has done incredibly well, watch PS3 now keep running away from 360.
4. Mario Kart Wii is easily going to overtake Smash Bros Brawl - my bet with Zeos will be won by me before Smash even comes out in Europe!! (Although the European launch may effect things) Posted on: 05/06/08, 07:05

I have played it a good amount this week and really, it deserves the many many 10s it recieved, theres just so much to like and so little to complain about (ok, driving control could be better esp the hand brake but thats about it). GTA IV will most likely sell more in a month in North America alone then Halo 3 will sell in a its first year. If you toss in others and Japan where the PS3 is bigger then the 360 GTA IV will most likely hit the 10 million mark in short order with an overall sales edge probably going to the PS3 when all is said and done. As an owner of both consoles (we all make mistakes) I spent 10 minutes arguing with the manager of my local retailer since he reserved me a 360 version to get my hands on the PS3 game instead launch day. I can't think of too many people who own both who wouldn't opt for the PS3 version download content be damned hence the higher PS3 attach rate.
As far as the hardware goes this was really the last chance for the 360 to catch up until the end of the year since theres almost nothing more on the horizon for MS. On the other hand Sony has all the heavy hitters on the way from MGS4 and GT5 to FFXIII and Little Big Planet (which I think will drive sales more then any other game if its as good as it looks, little big planet combined with a 299 price point will finally pull in a lot of the casuals that are still buying the PS2). Most people who want to play Gears of Wars 2 already own a 360, yet another first person shooter is not going to convince anyone new.
In the end there will be two winners, Nintendo and previous generation Sony hardware will split the casual market (PS2 and Wii) while the PS3 wins the HD gamers. I would bet the PS3 and Wii 2.0 will do the same next generation as the PS4 takes the new high end market. MS can feel free to continue to compete but it has always been and will always be a 20% or less of the market bit player.
I don't get why everyone keeps pointing to "Wii beats Sony and MS" as if they're going after the same market. Thats like saying "OMG Corolla sells more then the BMW 3 series!". Of course it does, they're going after different markets that only somewhat overlap. The day the Wii outsells the PS2 and its 120 million worldwide consoles (its real competition this generation) you can claim victory for Nintendo. Posted on: 05/06/08, 08:27

Gohan, no need to feel let down, the PS2 had the market to itself for over 20 months! thats something thats never happened in the history of gaming unless you go back to the days of the Atari 2600 in the 1970s, today we have a healthy market, and 3 good selling consoles leading the way.
just wanting one company to steal the show and run away with it would be bad for gaming.
I like the fact that one console a great movie player, one's has the best on line games around, and the other is a console that your Granny or 3 year old would love to join in on.

Mario Kart Wii was unbelievable! Sure GTAIV beat it out, but it was right behind the PS3 version by a hair. I could have never anticipated this! Wow! Yeah, paid off huge. Almost outsold a game on a console with a userbase sixty percent less... And it didn't beat it. Huge win. Took down GTA IV big time.
Next time, try comparing it to GTA IV on a comprable install base *cough*360*cough*

MK Wii came out on Sunday, and GTA IV on Tuesday, so it had a longer week, and still couldn't surmount GTA IV on PS3, which I must say again, has 6 million less consoles out (over half) than the Wii.
But I should clarify, MK Wii did awesome in it's own right. And is an amazing opening, as is Wii hardware. They did excellent. But don't try to compare them to GTA IV and say that MK Wii did great compared to them. Posted on: 05/06/08, 13:46

If mario kart didnt sell more then a ps3 game with half the fanbase then id be worried.......
I have the balls to say MKwii sales sucks... it couldnt outsell a ps3 game in USA which is horrible.... id be very worried once sony drops the ps3s price to wii levels. This is the type of game all the wii fans wait for and it should of beat GTA4 on ps3. (Sense we know most of the people bought it on 360 anyway)
Almost all nintendo games sell millions so this is not a record of any kind.

You're all talkin' about GTA 4, not "some Ps3 game".
It's probably the most anticipated game in history, and ur mockin over the fact that it outsold every other game, "even" MK, "even" on a Playstation, one of the most awared brand we know.

I really really didn't.
Was a big gamble by Nintendo, which, IMHO, has paid off well.
If they had released MK during a "normal" week, I doubt it would have made a blip in the press.
But now I'd say the press are going to have to mention it when they write the inevitable articles about how great GTA4 sold.
