Thanks for putting this together.

They're all using different periods so it's hard to derive too many conclusions about this data, but I notice that only 10 out of 15 are making money. And the losers are losing big. Really big.

Shame to see so many losses, especially from Take 2. GTA should help rectify the situation though. Can't say I'm that disappointed to see EA fail. Maybe they will go back to their roots and invest in creativity rather than lame licenses.

The predictable EA hate in the vgchartz forums leads me to believe you don't actually play the EA games you think are so lame and uncreative. NHL 08 is supposed to be really good, better than NHL 2k8. Madden 08 was decent, at least on the 360, and it's much better than All-Pro Football 2k8. Skate is better than the latest Tony Hawk, and far more innovative. FIFA 08 is considered by many to be better than PES 2008 I believe. Same with Rock Band compared to GH3. And Burnout Paradise looks quite good also. And didn't they also publish The Orange Box and Crysis?

Wikipedia:

"For 2006, the games review aggregation site Metacritic gives the average of EA games as 72.0 (out of 100); 2.5 points behind Nintendo (74.5) but ahead of the other first-party publishers Microsoft (71.6) and Sony (71.2). The closest third-party publisher is Take 2 (publishing as 2K Games and Rockstar) at 70.3. The remaining top 10 publishers (Sega, Konami, THQ, Ubisoft, Activision) all rate in the mid 60's."

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick

That's it!

I've got it!

The solution to the third-parties' problems!

@Game_boy

All third parties figured that before you did, obviously...

You are right famousringo, to be really helpful it will be useful collect previous financial result by these companies and put them in their proper context.

This work is very huge so I've brought only last 2 - 4 quarter of respective companies , plus companies that I listed in "half year" don't have their " Christmas period " and Holiday season , is known, is very important for gaming companies.

It will be very interesting if someone like FishyJoe could collect every quarter ( or so on ) the financial statement ( like net income/loss ) for the biggest third party ( obviously if he has time ... ).

Right now I'm generalising based on no evidence, but all those losses in my view surely show how unprofitable producing next-gen titles is. I mean, you're selling the games at the same price as 10 years ago, even though they cost VASTLY more to make and there has been some SERIOUS inflation. It makes no sense to me.

Surely Wii and DS-level development is the only way to go, unless next gen games start selling for a lot more, which I simply can't see happening due to games already being ridiculously expensive in comparison to DVDs or CDs.

Excellent, thank you! This data should be collected by vgchartz.

Hardcore gaming is a bubble economy blown up by Microsoft's $7 $6 billion losses.

Sinha -- excellent post.

For everyone else, I thought this might interest people:

The combined net income of these companies:

Sony's CE Division
Microsoft's CE division
Eidos
Take 2
Electronic Arts
Konami
Sega/Sammy
Namco/Bandai
Activision
Capcom
SquareEnix
Hudson
Ubisoft
Infogrames

Over this time frame is approximately -1,148,000,000, or negative one billion, one hundred and fourty eight million dollars. The highest earner is Microsoft (150 million) followed by Namco Bandai, with a total positive net income of 71.5 million dollars.

Nintendo's net income in this time frame is 1.15 billion dollars. Nintendo has earned approximately 2.3 billion dollars more than the rest of this list combined. If I've made errors in calculation, let me know.
