Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony Computer Entertainment: profit/losses timeline since 1996 to 2007

I've pulled together Sony's game division data since 1996 for those of you interested on exactly how much Sony's gaming division profited or loss over the years.

NOTE: 1994 and 1995, are not on the list because Sony bunched up the gaming data as "others" along with things like semiconductors, batteries and laptops. Therefore, I cannot find solid information on the 1994 holiday season and the full 1995 fiscal year. If any of you find it, post it with a source. All of these numbers are added up through the yearly statements and are all in USD currency.

1996: $67,712,000

1997: $432,159,000

1998: $885,879,000

1999: $1,137,500,000

2000: $730,000,000

2001: $409,000,000

2002: $623,000,000

2003: $939,000,000

2004: $650,000,000

2005: $404,000,000

2006: $75,000,000

2007: $1,968,644,000

*All years ending March 31.

Total reported gains: $5,876,538,000
Total reported losses: $2,445,356,000

Total reported profit: $3,431,182,000

Feel free to weigh in what you think happened during each year and why you think the numbers gained or loss.

EDIT:

Fiscal Year of 2008

Q1 08: $237,000,000

Q2 08: $841,000,000

Q3 08: $113,000,000

FY2008 - Q4: $965,000,000

Updated total profit since 1996: $2,466,182,000

*These numbers are approximate and taken directly from Sony's yearly/quaterly reports.

*A fiscal year in Japan starts in Apri, 01 of the PREVIOUS year. EXAMPLE: The fiscal year of 08 is April,01.2007 to March,31.2008.

*Oh yeah, and if you guys haven't noticed by now... red means loss and green means gain..

Ok i might be wrong but didn't they post a $113 mil profit for 2007 and not a $2 bil loss?

113m profit for quarter 4. that just means in Q 1-3 they lost 1.9bil

yes, auron, you're very wrong. it's $113 mil profit for Q3, not the whole year.

good work!

the Wii is an epidemic.

Aha ok that makes sense then.

Wierd that they were making more profit with the PS1.

The $1,968,644,000 loss is said to be ended on March, 31 of 2007. Just like every other number on the list ended on march, 31 of that year.

@Aj_habfa: 2006 and 2007 would have been insanely huge for Sony Computer Entertainment if it weren't for the cost of developing and manufacturing the PS3. If we can see exactly how much profit the PS2 generated alone, I'm pretty sure it would be past the PS1.

Anyone have a list like this for MS's console division?

Nice post btw.

No they weren't... Everytime they introduce a new console their numbers will definatly drop.

No, for the 4 years before a new console was released PS1 made over 700 Million more.

PS2 has had a way longer lifespam though, so it's not especially fair to count all it's years.
