Forums - Sales Discussion - German Hardware Sales (GfK)

Sorry if this has already been posted, I'm on vacation so haven't been keeping upto date.

Anyway, we now have November & December hardware sales (unfortunately not separate months, but we do have DS and PS2 numbers this time).

November & December 2007:

NDS - 653,000
WII - 339,000
PS2 - 184,000
PS3 - 136,000
360 - 56,000

YTD 2007:

NDS: 1.8m

LTD (End 2007)

Wii - 728,000
360 - 384,000
PS3 - 309,000

Link

Compared to VGC for the same period:

Console Wii
Germany
760,444

Console PS3
Germany
424,559
Console X360
Germany
403,970

Wii and 360 are very close, but PS3 is overtracked by quite a bit compared to GfK. Anyway, hope this data helps to increase the accuracy here.

Fortunately GfK release German hardware data every few months, so whilst not as frequent as US or JP data, it's a lot better than UK or France.

This is for Diomedes and all the guys who routinely complain the PS3 is undertracked in Europe. It wouldn't surprise me if it's undertracked in some countries and overtracked in other ones, those things should more or less balance out.

By the way, the Wii has 51.2% market share in Germany according to GfK.

It's difficult to track European sales so for certain some hardware will be over or undertracked in some countries.

It's worth noting that the article states that GfK covers over 80% of the market in Germany, so actual sales are higher (this suggests GfK don't extrapolate to 100% of the market as NPD do). So VGC hardware should probably be 15-20% higher than GfK (I assume VGC aims to cover 100% of the market).

I've seen similar statements about all the market research companies (NPD, Media Create) etc. It doesn't mean they don't extrapolate, what makes you think so?

AFAIK it just means that they get data from 80% of the stores.

"It doesn't mean they don't extrapolate, what makes you think so?"

Because that's what the article says:

"Die GfK deckt mit ihren Zahlen zum Konsolenmarkt gut 80 Prozent aller Vertriebskanäle ab. Die tatsächlichen Verkäufe liegen daher etwas höher. "

As far as I know neither GfK or Chart-Track extrapolate for any PAL countries as unlike NPD they generally cover such a high percentage already.

I think it's somewhat strange, since previous GfK figures for other countries didn't seem to show that. Who wrote that sentence, was it some random blogger or someone with any credibility?

The source is Euro am Sonntag, a weekly German business newspaper. We get the same from GfK Italy too, those numbers aren't extrapolated either, although they also give out the market coverage percentage too so it's possible to extrapolate it yourself.

OK, maybe I was wrong. However, extrapolation isn't as simple as that. The stores they cover might be much bigger (or smaller) than the ones they don't cover.
