Forums - Gaming Discussion - rumor ps4 might use ps3 cell chip

http://www.gamecyte.com/ps4-based-on-existing-cell-processor

not scaled... same chip, nothing new but die shrunk

it would  not be too a odd since the current chips capacities are limited by lack of ram

but interesting none the less

anyone care to translate for us the original japanese artical to see if they are getting it right?

PS4 might just be 2 PS3's ducttaped together. D:

Pixel Art can be fun.

If that's true, then it seems that they will follow the same Gamecube-wii pattern.

it makes sense that they would just use an slightly upgraded, if at all upgraded cell chip. i mean it would be cheap as heck for them and more ram = better cell chip. also gives them a slight edge on developing games, be quicker and easier. but i think we would likely see a cell with more gpu type capabilities

Um...why wouldn't they base their next machine on the cell? BC would come back for the next gen and the development costs would be much lower than this gen.

Did anyone expect anything different?

probably just multicore one multi spe one.

that reduce cost due new cheaps 22mm less fabric is used.
its fully compatible with ps3 software and capable of emulating ps2 software easily.

An enhanced Cell, say 12-16 SPUs (instead of 8), with 512KB localstore (instead of 256KB), and two full-fledged PPUs (instead of one which has 2 enforced hardware threads), coupled with 1GB of RAM, and a 800 MHz GPU would completely rock... and do 1080p no problem in any game.

Upgrading the Cell would allow devs to do very simple incremental engine upgrades, and also lower the dev costs of the processor itself by a large margin. It would malso make PS3 BC very easy. Using an improved Cell for the PS4 would be an excellent business move by Sony, IMO.

.... Sony announced this in 2005 as their plans... really... this is old news... people are just realizing this is what they are planning... they also plan on using a micro-cell for the PSP2...

The Cell architecture is scalable, so this had been expected for quite sometime.

They could do a couple of things for the ps4, like adding more SPUs onto the Cell, or creating a Cell cluster with multiple Cells on one die.

It should be great for backwards compatibility, though, assuming they keep the rest of the architecture somewhat similar.

artical is claiming it will be the same chip, not same family but same chip, (die shrunk being the only change as that is already happening in current units)

its not just basesed on the cell, its the same cell as in the ps3 is what they are saying, I had thought they would advance the cell a bit. also the mention of going back to standard ram ddr series, is interesting, it seems they want to keep cost down.
