The building I live in has a community area where people leave old clothes, shoes, and bad VHS movies they don't want anymore.  If nobody else takes it, it gets dropped off at the Goodwill 1 block away.

Today I saw an XBox 360 there, with the A/V cables and a plug, but no controllers or games.  Figured it was broken or something, but what the hell, I plugged it in.  RROD.

How much would it cost to get one of these repaired?  Could I sell it to GameStop?

Check if it's still under warranty. If you have a Window Live id, register the console at:

http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/LiveIDSignIn.aspx?redirectUrl=http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/registerdevice.aspx?step=repair

It should ask for a serial and tell you if there's any warranty left. Most likely there won't be, but it's worth a shot. If there is, you can send it in and get it repaired for free.

Also, if it's out of warranty, this is from Xbox support:

"Q: How much does it cost for an out of warranty repair?

A: If you submit your out-of-warranty console for repair through the Xbox Support Web site, you will benefit from a discounted flat charge of US$99.99. However, if you choose to contact a Support Agent to create a repair on your behalf, an out-of-warranty repair for an Xbox 360 console will cost US$119.99 (plus tax). If your Xbox 360 console is out of warranty and it has been less than three years from the date that you purchased the console, your repair will be free of charge if there are three flashing red lights on the front of the console,or if an E74 error message is displayed on the screen. Microsoft may test your console for 3 Flashing Red Lights or E74 errors upon receipt at our service center. If your console has not logged a 3 Flashing Red Lights or E74 error, and you are out of the standard manufacturer’s warranty, you will be offered a standard repair at our normal out of warranty fee. If your console is out of warranty and you do not want to pay for it to be repaired, we will return your console to you unrepaired."

Gamestop does give some trade-in-value for broken 360's. I believe it was $35 for a system that was not working. It would be less than that since you are missing the controller.

Thanks for such a quick and informative reply! So I could get a working 360 for $100 now. I guess I'll store it away for a rainy day for now... this is an interesting development.

See if its still under warranty. If it is, then you'll have a working 360 for free in two weeks.

I don't have a Windows Live account or anything, is there a number I can call to just czech if it has a warranty with the serial number?

If a free 360 just fell out of the sky, I'll have to lay off Microsoft and double my Sony trolling. That's gonna be rough.

Buy a new 360 elite. Take the shell off your brocken 360 and your elite. replace the hardware of brocken 360 into the elite shell. Put the elite hardware in your brocken 360 shell. Return elite shell with brocken 360, say it was brocken or whatever. Bingo. Free 360!!! I KNow people who have done this multiple times without the hint of being caught. Plus, buy with cash and not cards. microsoft deserves this for makin a product that breaks so much. It just makes it that more danm believable.

Well, any hotmail email address with work as well.

Check the manufacturers date on the back of the 360. That'll tell you if the warranty has expired.
