I'm amazed that the numbers are so low ! None of the Diablo games sold more 3,5 million units ....
Even more suprising to me is that Skyrim sold under D3 !
Is this right ? One of the commentors stated that D3 sold over 10 milion units ......
Why doesn't VG update these numbers ?

Most sales for this game are digitals. That's amazing, this really is the future of gaming.

Lots of those sales are likely digital sales. While this did great on retail, digital sales are now the main driving force of the PC gaming business.

This game seems to be significantly under tracked. At Activision/Blizzard's latest Quarterly Report / Meeting they announce world wide sales of Diablo III reaching 10 MILLION. This website still has it at 2.57 million, World Wide. Now, I understand that VgChartz does NOT track digital sales. But I truly doubt that digital sales have constituted for 75% of all sales for this game. I have a hard time believing that for a game of this magnitude, only 25% bought the hard copy.

Regardless, Activision/Blizzard announced 10 million units sold world wide (http://www.videogamer.com/pc/diablo_3/news/diablo_3_sells_over_10_million_copies_as_blizzard_has_best_financial_quarter_ever.html). The game is an absolute monster. Unfortunately, the record breaking sales figures for this game does not translate to quality.

Yeah, I haven't bought a retail copy of a game on pc since 2008 (Age of Conan). I can usually download and install a game in 30 - 45 minutes, less time than going to a brick and mortar store. Plus no gas :)

This game probably is selling more digital copies than retail copies. At forums it`s rare to find someone who got the retail edition. Got the digital on myself.

It's sold over 6 million copies.... We have it at 2.09. When wil digital downloads be relevant as sales? It's probably undertracked in retail but i think we should start raking digital sales soon.

-girgosz - Nevermind, many PC games figures here are utter nonsense. For example look at The Witcher 1 here, it was mainly successful in Europe, it sold 2.1 million units worldwide and still vgchartz is dare to claim that it sold only 0.02m in Europe...

T.Rexington posted 01/06/2012, 11:13
@ Pezus Sorry man, but considering D3 is a online only title, people had very little incentive to buy a physical version. outside of physical item collectors. These people are a minority and most will go with the digital version out of pure convenience.

-girgosz- posted 31/05/2012, 08:12
MichiGen: Those Crysis sales are only retail and they are only for Europe. Learn how to read. The game is not tracked in America and digital sales are not tracked either. Vgchartz is not hiding it(it says 0.00 below 'USA'). Some old games are not tracked properly especially forr the PC but you can always check which game is not tracked by clicking on 'Global' on it's page. If it's not showing numbers for the first 10 weeks then it's not tracked.

MichiGen posted 31/05/2012, 04:30
I don't think VGchartz track anything... it looks like those numbers are only from their heads = FAKE. At least 90% of all PC games here are utterly undertracked. Sometimes you need to multiply the vgchartz figures 4 or 5 times to get on the true number. It's not very funny when EA and Crytek announce that Crysis sold more than 3 millions on the PC and it's only 0.67m here..

mattployhar: Ok, I know it's getting more popular. I know the sites you mentioned and they are only a small percent of actual digital sales. Look at Starcraft II. Most of the sales are still retail. So why would the world turn this big? Besides, this game has a huge fanbase of geeks, they might want an actual copy or CE edition.

@Girg - Actually Errorpwns is correct. More so than perhaps he realizes. I track game sales for a living. Talk to all the ISVs... most of the Analysts as well. Diablo is now sitting at nearly 6.5m in total sales. MOST PC gamers have migrated to Digital. Retail (unfortunately) is a husk of what it used to be. Don't forget.. the E. Hemisphere of PC Gamers actually dwarfs both the US & Europe combined. Also; in terms of Digital Services.. it's not just Steam.. but BattleNet, Impulse, D2D, Origins, etc. I also know several game ISVs that release games up on Torrent (Free digital distribution for F2P or Sub games). Even the beloved Console boys/girls are increasingly getting their games on PSN & LIVE etc. I don't necessarily 'like' it either.. but thems the facts.

errorpwns: You're dead wrong. Maybe in America that is the case but every one of my friends buys retail games including myself here in Hungary. Steam is popular here too but people prefer collecting games.

knocturnal2435: Yes. VGC only traks retail sales. Digital sales(Steam, PSN, XBL) are impossible to track. This applies to every game on this site. However these sales seem way off. I am sure that at least 50% of the sales are retail.
Message | Report
knocturnal2435 posted 29/05/2012, 07:17
VGChartz only tracks actual store bought / retail / hard copy sales? Because, like I said before, that figure seemed way off for Diablo III.

Have digital PC sales really surpassed retail store bought copies by that wide of a margin? 1.8 million (VGChartz) of 6.3 million (officially released figures) means that only ~ 29% of Diablo III purchases were done through retail outlets?

Does that also apply for console games with XBX LIVE? Meaning, VGChartz doesn't track sales for console games (e.g. Rage) if purchased via XBXLIVE?

errorpwns posted 29/05/2012, 04:39
Is it that hard for people to grasp the concept that these are retail sales? Not many PC gamers actually buy retail anymore. They usually prefer digital download.

What I don't get... Dozens of official reports out there have this game selling 3.5 million world wide in its first 24 hours and 6.3 million world wide in its first week, and VGChartz has the game at a whopping... 1.78 million after a full week. Pretty big discrepancy for VGChartz.

That said, I like the game a lot. It's not close to as good as Diablo II, but it's good.

Sales as much smaller than I anticipated, I thought Diablo III would have sold above 1 million in the United States at retail. I guess more than 50% of the sales were digital from Blizzard's Website (which can't be tracked independently very well).

skyrim 5.7 mil
fable 3 4.7 mil
fable 2 4mil
oblivion 3.7 mil
fallout 3 3.6 mil etc etc
need i say moore?
what is the best selling rpg on pc?
diablo 2?
and that one came 12 years ago when pc actually had good sales
dont compare xbox 360 sales with pc
the 2006-2012 years alone for xbox 360 generated far beyond more money then the entire pc gaming

Wont ever reach 10 million. This game will be pirated to pieces on pc. Even if Blizzard dropped the lan support it will be pirated so much that you would not believe. Blizzard should get their head out of their asses and release this game on consoles. One way or the other. They know that pc is not gonna bring them enough money to cover the decade of development costs.
