still selling quite well despite the piracy issue!!! Well done for this type of game and still priced around $20 on average in most stores http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=house+of+the+dead+overkill&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=3336758258891064499&ei=hi2HS7OaJYbUsQOM9fSTBw&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CBQQ8wIwAg#ps-sellers. I knew this and Madworld would blow up in sales once it hit $30 and I was so right. I have my doubts with The Conduit though but that is still doing okay!

Sorry to hear that it is still overpriced at Sweden. IMHO this game should really be priced and bought at $30 or less; $20 being the sweet spot.

Right. The market is different now.

I wish I could find the game at the fine prices you have in USA. the cheapest in Sweden i have found it was at 229 kr/32USD. Thinking about buying it from another Country i Europe.

this game has been sitting in the 75-100 spot in amazon for a long time even now because of the $13 price. It has been at this price and been selling for so long i really doubt it is a fire sale by retailers that resulted in the low price, sega knows this is a sweet price point and is milking it as long as they can. They are probably selling it for $10 to retailers.

Don't forget the fact that HOTD2-3 also sold at $20-$30 when it first came out. That it barely had any competition aside RE:UC and was massively featured in many gaming sites before it was released!

@ kopstudent89

I did not know The House of the Dead: Overkill had stopped selling. Maybe because it has not.

Further more, the previous game took a long time to get to where it is now, at about the same speed as this one.

It also came out in a different time where core gamers was starving for a core game, before many gamers got tired of waiting for good games and then getting a second console.

It's also a classic non expensive game pack for people wanting to relive previous times. And it was before many people got tired of on-rail shooters.

Overkill is doing good. Many people who pick it up ain't doing it as a first choice, but thats okay.

600k sounds like good sales to me. Not there yet but oh so soon.

Now 007: Quantum of Solace and Iron Man has fallen behind HotD: Overkill.

And about the piracy, yes it affects, but I think a few of the pirates at least are buying the game as it is pretty close to free with a nice box and all.

with all said I picked this up for $15 at amazon cuz it's a great title. It sold quite well and at the very least should have Sega breaking even if not profit a bit. After all games like Bionic Commando, Too Human, Folklore, N9 nights, Perfect Dark etc also bombed on HD consoles and sold these numbers at liquidation price and those games COST A GREAT DEAL MORE!!! ( BTW I got those games as well when they were at liquid prices ;P )

3 top reasons why this game didn't sell well

#1. Piracy: http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=6352 this game was pirated 900k times easily denting it's sales potential.
#2. Initial Price Point Wrong: Sega should have sold this game for $30-$40 as it was a rail shooter and nobody wants to pay $50 for a rail shooter. If they went with $30 they would have dented the effects of piracy on their games as well!!!
#3. Advertisement/Impression all wrong: Not only did this game have minimal advertising ( I honestly never saw TV, Magazine, or Posters boards at gaming stores) but less than a month Sega/retailers also kept fluctuating the price keeping gamers at bay until the price stabilized.

krammaii posted 10/01/2010, 07:41
There's a difference between selling a half a million at full price and selling a half a million at $19.99. I doubt this game made much profit at all... I've seen this game for $14.99 new which means they are just trying to liquidate stock.

A game doesn't have to sell a million to make a profit, or to not be considered a flop. This probably, as Chrizum said, made SEGA millions upon millions of dollars.

Another game that ppl said would flop based on intitial sales. I guess they don't realize that most Wii games sell in the long run; which is good as all the shovelware gets sorted out now and receives terrible sales. This bodes well for Dead Space:Extraction (though they really could have changed the terrible box art as they turned a lot of ppl off)
