Um...why the heck is this adjusted down? When I joined VGChartz last december this was at like 4.4 million.

Isn't this adjusted?

It's adjusted, it was over 4m for sure. Adjusted down which is hilareous, because it is most definitely undertracked. VGC already took over a year to match Nintendo's published numbers back in 2012 so this is not exactly credible.

You know a franchise has some serious power when you do almost no promotion and your E3 presentations for it are bad and the game launches on a dying platform but the thing STILL sells 4mil, STILL gets nominated for numerous awards, and STILL wins multiple large publications GOTY awards. In the same year Skyrim and Arkham City launched.

I love ths game. Nintendo needs to fix the timing of their Zelda release cycle. You can't release a game of this class and scope right before a console is phased out, when public interest for the system has died down.

Seems like this was discontinued at retail too soon. Nintendo never produced additional shipment -- the lack of distribution 2012 onwards is what's kept it from selling better.

And Wii games still sold fairly well in 2012/2013 (some 2014)
shouldn't this be way above the 3.80 mark?

@Anfebious:
Exactly, that's what I've been saying for years now. No way this game is this 'low'.

It's too bad Nintendo never released sales figures beyond that 3.42m figure in it's first month. I'm positive this game in reality is comfortably above 4m, especially since we know there were still multiple shipments later on in it's life (first with and later without the audio-CD and the last one having different box-art).

Anfebious posted 23/09/2014, 04:32
Correct me if I'm wrong but according to Wikipedia this game sold 3.42 million copies in a month. And here it shows the game only sold 3.77 lifetime...

Which means that 3 years passed and all the game was able to sell was... 0.35 units. Either this game is undertracked or everyone really hated this game...

"(it lists it only sold 2.9 million worldwide here if you check, about 500k less than what it actually sold)"
Actually I didn't make myself very clear here. What I meant to say was that VGChartz has Skyward Sword's sales listed as 2.9 million worldwide in it's first year, when it sold at least 3.42 in its first year according to Nintendo.
Message | Report
Lynx_7 posted 07/02/2013, 05:10
But the thing is, it sold 3.42 millions of copies in 1 month(as of december 2011), the fastest selling Zelda title, and Vgchartz had it way undertracked (it lists it only sold 2.9 million worldwide here if you check, about 500k less than what it actually sold). I find it quite hard to believe this only sold 80.000 copies in 2012, so it's likely that SS is already above 4m in sales, maybe around AoL's VGC sales numbers, which is a very good performance for a Zelda game considering only 3 titles have sold above 5m. You just have to take VGChartz numbers with a grain of salt, they're not completely accurate in many cases.

Roar_Of_War posted 06/02/2013, 05:18
I hate to be the one to say this, but these sales are perfectly in line with the Zelda series standards considering this games situation. I don't know what alternate universe you people live in where Zelda is suppose to sell 7 million with every single entry, but Zelda sequels (on the same console type of sequels, in this case Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword) typically sell anywhere from 3-4 million, and lets not forget that the Wii was almost completely dead by the time this game released. Be happy this game broke the 3 million barrier with how unpopular the Wii was in 2011. Combine that with requiring an add-on just to play the game (and Zelda fans bought the Wii for TP in 2006, meaning most Zelda fans probably did not have a Wii Motion) and you pretty much have a Majora's Mask scenario: Late release on a nearly dead console, required add-on to play, Zelda sequel (which always means lower sales than the first game) = 3-4 million lifetime.

Nintendo must be absolutely shocked about these sales numbers. They said it's their most expensive game ever, they surely lost a lot of money. I'm afraid Zelda may have to take a backseat to Mario and other more lucrative series in the future.
And that's just the business side... it's making me genuinely sad that so few people experienced this masterclass in game design. 3.5 million is a disgrace.

@ Pokeclaudel
Considering it's more realistic to believe it at 4m by now, it's sales aren't bad. Zelda sales are always inconsistent; it never follows the user base of a system. Moreover, this was the second game on the system, the second game always performs notably worse than the first. This is true on NES, N64, GB, GC, GBA, DS and now Wii.

Nintendo have confirmed unit sales for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, such details emerging from the supporting documents for their investor’s briefing held earlier today.

Within the previous fiscal year, which ran until the end of March, 3.52 million units were sold globally.

Of this, 360,000 units were sold in Japan with a further 3.15 million units sold overseas.

I'm guessing it's reached, or will reach 4m by the end of the year.

Well it became a disappointment when it started off as the biggest selling Zelda of all time, but then went down very quickly. Now it's struggling to get to 4m, and probably now ends up as one of the lesser selling Zelda's. Though I do agree it's most likely way undertracked, and selling over 3m is good for any other franchise that is not one of Nintendo's flagships.

This, by far the WORST Zelda game I've ever played. Linear gameplay, boring characters, forced and gimmicky controls, the most boring quests EVER in a Zelda game, and overall it's just not worth it. Twilight Princess kept on selling because Wii was new. But with U comming out, it would be stupid to keep making Wii games, specially with so little interest shown by consumers in keep buing this game. ZeroPunctuation has the best review of this game, and to deny how bad it is, is to be blind. Even Miyamoto has recognized that the game had many flaws, and that the Wii U Zelda will be different and won't force motion controls into the player. Even Skyrim and Batman keep selling better, because those are true games, not this joke. Zelda should be about a large adventure, where you can explore and find secrets. Not a game for kids that takes your hand, tells you what to do and where to go ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE END. The most interesting character was Groose. The main cast is as sterotypical as you can get... and check my profile. I LOVE Zelda. That's why I hated this game so much. Anyone else is free to like it if they want. I despiced it.

As predicted, it came out with a lot of steam, had the holidays push it but ran into the same issues that Majora's Mask faced (dying console and required add on to play). Sales sitting at 3.24 million is not bad, but it is not good either. It has slowed down to a snails pace right now. Toppling 4 million world wide and 2 million USA will be the last of its two milestones. And I don't even know if the latter is within reach. It's a shame, because the release date really hurt the commercial success of the game. Had it come out when the Wii was surging there is no doubt in my mind that the game could have easily toppled 5 million, with a shot of 6+ million world wide. A game this good deserved better.

@AOK Games - No, a lot of gamers have sold their Wii, and stated they will not buy another Wii just for one game, so the whole "Zelda fans would already have a Wii" is incorrect. Also, TP being released as a launch title would give it a boost in having higher sales quicker, not lower sales. You have games as launch titles with consoles because that helps boosts sales. SS is released towards the end of the product life cycle, so there are reasons why sales would dip. And even then, 3.52 million total is GOOD still for just a few months.

What you're failing to note is that Twilight Princess was released when the Wii launched, so sales were going to be significantly slower. However, Skyward Sword was released five years later, when Zelda fans would already have a Wii. On top of that, it was released prior to the holiday season, so there's no reason why sales should have dipped this much.

Why are people saying SS sales are avg?? You can't take 6 years worth of data from TP and compare it with like 4 months. SS sales are good. It broke a record and sold faster then any other Zelda game. Nintendo announced end of Jan that it reached 3.49 million. Zelda games don't sell 5-6 million their first year - TP didn't reach 6 million until 5 years later.

@chickenmoshpit Install base is not relative to performance there are a number of other factors. Wind Waker sold 4.6m on a 22m selling console if skyward sword had that ratio it would sell 20m which would never happen. Being sold on a console on its last legs, the extra price point due to accessory, a console geared towards casuals, an obscure artstyle and motion controls are all factors which have contributed to average sales ( compared to TP). You see having a 95m install doesn't count for much when the majority of those users will only buy wii sports and just dance. Even with a 62m install base SS hypothetically would have sold much better on ps3 because its not dominated by casual players.

No, they don't. Skyward Sword actually sold less than Twilight Princess last week in the US.

...just...wow.
