Sonic the hedgehog on Sega Genesis/Megadrive sold 15 million including bundles and Sonic 2 sold 10 million. Vgchartz dont have the lifetime sales for these games so this is no way near the best selling Sonic game. Message | Report |

I don't think this game sold well for the sole reason that Mario was present with Sonic. Its a mainstream party/sports game that a 'must' have for wii owners. The additional advertisement and publicity of the game and the simple pick up and play nature of it are also factors. Obviously Mario and Sonic being present contribute to this, but its not the sole reason. Message | Report |

topcat- it never sold because of the Olympics in the first place. That was a silly assumption most made. I thought they would have realized that after it didn't get significant increases during and after the Olympics. The game became a mainstream necessity. And it's not hard to believe considering the appeal of both Mario and Sonic around the world. Not to mention tie it in on the Wii with a Wii Sports type scenario and sound gameplay and you have yourself a hit. This game became mainstream which allows it to sell well throughout the year and then pick up a hell of a lot during the holidays. Just like you are seeing with Galaxy. Message | Report |

I remember when Sega said they thought they could sell 5M copies between DS and Wii. They were wrong; it is going to sell 5M copies on Wii alone  Also, Gearbox, half the sales are in Europe and Sonic and the secret ring sold much better in Europe than in US according to VGChartz so I'm going to say "This game only sold because they put Mario AND Sonic in it!"
