Given that up until recently it's been on sale at full price and that it's a low budget title I'd personally say that they started to make a profit after it shifted 250,000 units, maybe even 200,000.

Unfortunately over-harsh reviewing in Europe has done this title some damage imo. I still think it'll go gold before the end of the financial year though.

no I think at around 150k-200k in sales I could definitely see HVS actually having some kind of profit. The revenue of such #'s would bring in between $7.5-10M minus 25% that the retailer actually profits off the game (roughly $12-13 every $50 game if I remember). It reached 250k before the $30 official price cut so it should have been profitable by then. The Conduit isn't a bomb with 300k in sales but it isn't a rousing success either until it reaches 400k-500k in sales.
Message | Report
Tuulikk posted 10/11/2009, 01:06
I don't think The Conduit can make a profit at 200k. But maybe at or after 350-500k shipped to stores, or something.

Sure, Sega probably profits as they ain't much more then the publisher. High Voltage Studios might profit from sales of their other games.

The work on The Conduit might save HVS some money on their game projects, but they also has to sell. Something The Conduit ain't the best at.

Anyway, at about 300k and selling steady every week means that The Conduit ain't a flop yet and it might save it self. Maybe Christmas will give some boast.

It wouldn't surprise me if they started to make a profit around the 200,000 mark, maybe even less than that.

I'd say the sequel is pretty much guaranteed already."

Close to 300k - not that bad. Should reach the profit zone soon.

Actually it probably already is if you consider that it only cost Sega $5 million to release this thing; and HVS used this game as a basis for their Q3 engine which will see release on several of their games. If you multiply $50 by 290K you get around $15M then subtract around 25% for what the retailers use as mark up for selling their games.

I for one is in the Wii360 at the moment(more Nintendo but I love games) and enjoying both systems immensely. Spurgeonryan, I'm not for or against bone in the madworld thread. It just seems kinda' silly for him to be complaining about quality titles being released for the Wii. I was trying to understand his frustration and why he couldn't just pick up the game and have fun with it? The only other reason I can think of is he has one of the HD consoles and would love to play some of the great titles coming out on the Wii lately. I know a couple of PS3 and 360 owners that are frustrated that they can't play Muramasa, Little King, Cursed Mountain, Boy and his Blob, Dead Space:Extraction (which debut on the HD consoles) and are hating on the system because of it.

With HVS working on Gladiator AD and The Grinder, there will be some time before they could do a sequel to The Conduit, with gives The Conduit some time to sell and get more worthy of a sequel.

A sequel won't be a unknown game anymore and it would be much more easy to make a better game thanks to all the assets from The Conduit and feedback from gamers and reviewers. And so on.

From the NES era to Wii, there has been some gameseries that had a bad start, but sequels did better.

Well, if they cut the price to $25 tomorrow sales would explode, topping 1 million as soon is Sega could press the disks. For your FPS dollar the Conduit is not a good deal as it stands. The only way I'd consider it at $55cdn if I only owned a Wii. As it stands I have a PC, and $55cdn on PC gets you much more FPS action. Farcry 2 $20 + Dead Space $20 + Battlefield 2 $10 = $50. You get the point.

Considering High Voltage self-funded the majority of the development I'd say that Sega started to earn profits from The Conduit a while back but I'd really like this to break 500,000 sales before the end of the financial year to guarantee a sequel.

The reviews in Europe in particular have been overly harsh imo and may have damaged sales somewhat. The addictive online multiplayer alone makes any review giving it less than 7/10 an insult imo.

I just purchased this game yesterday and I am pretty impressed. Most shooters these days lack the difficulty of old school FPS with the regen-health schemes that they carry. This game is fast paced and fun, the enemy variety might not be outstanding but I'd put it comparable to Gears of War (the first one). Graphics are very nice and clean proving that too many developers are just lazy on the Wii. I wish this game would sell better, it deserves it. Not a ground breaking effort by any means, but a solid shooter with a fast paced, almost TimeSplitters like feel. Hopefully this thing gets a holiday bump and sells something like half a mil so that it gets a sequel or at least High Voltage gets rewarded with a profit.

The story behind Conduit looks to be just another third party footnote two months into release. Unless Sega opts to re-launch the game for the holidays with renewed advertising (unlikely), the only significant additional sales will be from drastic price cutting (at $20-30) making it far from the success story many were hyping.

@boblafollette - I don't really think there was any hype saying it was going to revolutionize the fps genre, I expected it to be a decent wii fps with an effortful online offering, it delivered for me on that front. Despite all the bugs I still enjoy the game, but HVS needs to invest some time in testing their future games.

@Kai Master: Three was hype but it was definitely not as big as we all thought it would be. Also, it was really just the internet that had hype, the press wasn't that big on it.

Really, it was mostly Wii owners that just wanted a good Wii FPS (that isn't a port).

In a few weeks or so it will be time for Okami, Manhunt 2. Later on MadWorld, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams and Medal of Honor Heroes 2. The list will go on if The Conduit can do the same.

Maybe The Conduit is just going to reach 1m as slow as Lego Batman: The Videogame or a bit slower. Like 1-5-2 years after release.

The Conduit should sell 100-200k from now to end of November and could get a Christmas boost of 100k or more from December to January. That could put it at over 500k at the start of 2010 if all goes well, slowly building up to something just like House of the Dead games, Lego Batman, Sonic Unleashed and so on. But it could as well end at 400-700k.

Other than controls "The Conduit" Offers:
Great AI (At High and Severe difficulty).
14 hours of gameplay on single player mission on High difficulty.
A Variety of online game styles.
Weapon damage that is not too high or too low for online play.
Good variety of weapons. Unlike Half-Life.
Voice chat is easy to manage. It is very easy to set it up so only my friends can talk to me. Unlike other FPS. I have to listen to every whiny child in the game.
At least part of the game lacks health regeneration. (It is a start. Maybe the sequel will have none.)
Easy to use cheats for single player mission. This is not an uncommon feature, but I like it.
I have seen games with much less to offer receive low 8s. Call of Duty 3 for example received an 8.8 on IGN.com
