In fact, for a Mistwalker title, this is actually their second best-selling game so far. Its 160k total thus far is above those of "Lost Odyssey", and "A.S.H." and certainly the rest of the DS titles, if 50k less than "Blue Dragon". It's not a monster hit, but it's Mistwalker's #2 selling title.

It's not a complete bomb at all; it has sold past XENOBLADE. Sure it's not a 500k seller, but most developers would probably be glad to see a title clear 100k at all. With any luck it should still leg out to 200k.

There's definitely something to be said about its sales. Yes, the drops for this game were sharper than XENOBLADE, but even then, the ten week total for XB was approximately 20k behind what this has achieved thus far. This will probably come here, too; I doubt Iwata-san would want to let this title stay a Japanese-only release.

The fact this has already outsold Xrenoblade means it will definitely get localized. I hope it sells well in the West by Nintendo aggressively promoting it. It totally deserves sales of over 1 million worldwide, IMO.

Why such the disappointment? It's not stopped selling and has overtaken Xenoblade, whih is getting localised...so this will as well, will reach 200k in Japan, 300k in America and 200k in Europe, making it one of the best selling RPGs this gen!

Sales are holding at 2,000 a week. If it stays like this till December then it will totally pass 200,000 in Japan. I can't wait to see this game announced for NA and EU at E3 2011. Nintendo just confirmed Xenoblade for late 2011, afterall.

Tbh Galvanizer, i'm not too bothered - Sakaguchi's fans are FInal Fantasy fans who are on the Playstation consoles - why go exclusive i dont know. Nintendo will release shovelware and leave games like this in the vault. despite the millions they spend marketing games like Wii Party or Wii Dare - when they couldve localised it months ago for a similtaneous release.

@A203D I'm sure it's already planned for a NA/EU release. The president of Nintendo said that Wii still has years left, so I'm sure this and Xenoblade are currently being localized and will be shown at E3 2011. I'm choosing to stay optimistic.

Sales are decent for a new IP. Ninty should have shipped 200,000 copies on week 1, though. They only shipped 120,000 for the first week and that low shipment has affected sales, IMO. It should sell well in NA and EU when it gets released here.

@oniyide Nah, it wasn't supposed to sell that well as Nintendo only shipped 120,000 for the first week. They couldn't have expected high sales if they only shipped that much for week 1. I think it sold alright. If it comes out in NA and EU and is heavily promoted then it should reach 1 million worldwide.

Very disapointed by the game. Sakaguchi took a bad decision. He thinks that rpg must change and all but I don't think that making a short game with little content (items, skills, quests...) is a good idea. He's known for great and deep stories/game and last story is nothing like that.
Message | Report
JTurner82 posted 13/02/2011, 10:39
At this point we really can't label THE LAST STORY as a failure OR a success, because the truth is that it's neither. We have no idea where it will go after week 2. Either it will leg its way to 200k or it will continue to sell 10-5k every other week and disappear. Either way, I wouldn't lose hope on this seeing a release here. There's evidence to believe that we will. And it'll OBVIOUSLY sell better stateside than in Japan, which has only posted OK but not great numbers.

Boutros posted 12/02/2011, 05:22
@spurgeonryan There's no undertracking when it comes to Japan. Tracking firms like Media Create or Enterbrain work closely with Japanese retailers and the market is rather easy to track. There may be some variations but nothing to make it a whole different. Even Nintendo uses Media Create numbers in their conferences.
Message | Report
JTurner82 posted 11/02/2011, 04:47
In favor of TLS, it's still one of the highest selling new IPs for Mistwalker; its opening number was the biggest of any of their titles, and the second week drop, although drastic, was roughly on par with some of their others. Not a smashing success by any means, but not a failure. Is it disappointing that it is at 133900 so far? Sure. But that doesn't mean it'll stop selling. With any luck it'll probably make its way to 200k. If it can do that, then it will be a solid success.
Message | Report
JTurner82 posted 08/02/2011, 12:43
That doesn't mean it is a failure. Most games are lucky to sell over 100k these days, and if sales continue around the 20k-per-week mark, it should still cross XENOBLADE's total and top 200k. I'm sure we'll still see this come stateside as well.

NA sales just passed Japan sales. Looks like XSEED was right to bring it over.

Wow, so the sales for this game are now neck and neck in America and Japan. That's really great. Even better, it's about to cross the 500k mark. Not bad for a game many thought had no chance. Hironobu Sakaguchi-san and his team must be very pleased to hear this.

lol, this game is profitable for sure
anything beyond 500k is (except really high budget games like GTA4)

XSeed considers TLS their best selling game ever. So on that level, it's a profitable successs. Not as much as XENOBLADE, of course, but still respectable for a new JRPG.
