Microsoft PR is always units sold to consumers. VGCharts is simply wrong in this case.

They actually do have ways. First day sales have been announced for many huge games by the companies themselves. They each have internal tracking where they gather their own numbers aside from NPDs and you can bet they have worldwide totals for all their games. That's how you get first day numbers for games like Halo 3 and Super Mario Galaxy from the companies without NPD. They could provide them for any game if they deemed it necessary.

The same thing happened with MGS4. The bottom line: They would have no way of knowing if 1 million were sold to customers or not.

Sounds like sold to consumers to me, unless the author of the article was confused about the difference between shipped and sold himself.

People that think it is selling badly are crazy O.o;
It's currently the 70th best selling 360 title (and will of course keep moving up for a while). If it was on the PS3 it would be the 26th best selling game.

I think it will make 1 million eventually and has probably already turned a profit. I mean it has already done better than condemned, and that got a sequel. Also done better than games like haze, UT3 etc

Also, MGS was never a Microsoft published title, it has been a Konami title for as long as I can remember.

I still do not see how a Microsoft Game Studios published title is going to be on PS3 and please do not turn this into some kind of fanboy arguement. I loved love nothing more than to see NG2 more polished with more levels, a mission mode, etc. whether that be on PS3 or not, doesn't matter to me. I seriously, seriously doubt NG2 will be on PS3. First its published by Microsoft, so please list the last published Microsoft title that became a PS2 or PS3 game? It just doesn't happen with first party publising contracts.

Secondly, Team Ninja does not seem to exist right now. Itagaki is gone and all 300 Tecmo employees are in a class action lawsuit against Tecmo magagement. I am not sure that anyone is even working their right now, except the Tecmo president, who is obviously about to get the boot for treating the companys talent badly.

Tecmo has probably made their money already, after all Microsoft probably funded part of the development, besides co-publishing this title with them (my PAL copy of the game says both Microsoft and Tecmo in the cover).

There's probably also at least a timed exclusivity deal, so if this title ends up on a Sony console, it will probably be on the PS4 or a late release on the PS3.

Don't be so quick to count this generation out just yet, we are only 21/2 years in maybe half way thru and just consider what has been released in less then six months this year Burnout Paradise, DMC4, GTA4, Super Smash Bros Brawl, NG2, and today MSG4. All huge franchises and thats just the first half of this year, thats incredible. Normally gaming is a drought after the holidays until summer is over, but this year is incredible so far with lots left to go.

Oemenia posted 12/06/2008, 11:06
True, but i think that this gen is underwhelming simply because the sales arent there anymore. If you got a PSone or PS2, there were so many RPGs to choose from, it was truely amazing. This time round, yes the 360 is going to have a few, but really, its just nothing compared to last gen.

But yeah, 240k first week sales is impressive, and may go onto be the best selling Team Ninja game, who knows, lets just hope the hype stays and the demos continues to wow

I agree, the best thing MS can do is focus on RPG's for some success, BD and LO proved that even though Japan do not normally like Western products they will buy software if its what they want and can not find elsewhere. I believe thats why Microsoft had that RPG event a couple days ago. Infinite Undiscovery as exclusive, LAst Remenant timed exclusive, and SO4 exclusive for now is a major step in the right direction for X360. The Japanese love those JRPG's. Plus Cry On, Fable 2, and MAss Effect are still to come.

X360 is becoming a home for RPG gamers and it will be hard for gamers to ignore. I have seen many PS3 fanboys posting in forums saying they will have to get a X360 even though they hate Microsoft, not sure why you would hate a company other than EA,lol.

But yeah I agree with you and NG2 is a little disappointing in Japan but the other regions will do well enough for the franchise to continue if Tecmo or Microsoft want it to.

I would say youre right, Japanese gamers have different tastes, but importantly, i think they have poor tastes too. As you said, some hardcore genres live on there such as SHMUPs, but even then its just minor. But yeah, even back in the PS2 days, crap like Gundam and Dynasty Warriors would dominate the charts, and whats worse is that their critics would love them too. Similarly, they would buy any generic racer, yet stuff like Burnout they would COMPLETELY ignore, heck even NFS which is street, and street racing is big there.

I was still expecting more though, i dont know, lets hope it has legs, MS are doing a good job there, the userbase is 600k, 200k was just from BD, imagine what Tales of Vesperia bundle will do, which also happens to be a major franchise with a lot of other promotion too.

And then Infinite Undiscovery a few weeks later further keeping sales consistent, by XMAS, theyll have Last Remnant EXCLUSIVELY, further boosting sales at a critical time. Hopefully, by the time those games lose their fuel, MS will have another big promotion push ready for SO4 and/or Cry On.

Even though the userbase is paltry, the software sales arent completely in the toilet, their quite close too PS3, with some big name games selling a few copies. For example, DMC4, CoD4, Halo 3, Eternal Sonata, Idolmaster, Lost Odyssey (with very little promotion) are some that i can think off from the top of my head that have sold a reasonable amount, why it wasnt the same for NG2, i dont know, but its definitely disappointing.

nomorehalo posted 12/06/2008, 05:18
I don’t think those are disappointing US numbers at all. When it’s considered that most games quadruple their week one sales in the US over time, NGII will likely reach 700K in the US making it close to 1 million overall. If it has good legs like say Lost Odyssey it could even get passed 1million in the US.

I understand what you are saying, but you have really proven my point even better than me, its not a failure on NG2's part. IF, anything it shows that the Japanese market has lost interest in hardcore games. The market is flooded with pokemans, and brain training and casual games. Years ago Japan was known for hardcore titles especially with SCHUMP's (shoot em up's) in their hayday, but their tastes have changed. I would guess this is why we have seen a shift with Japanese developers looking to the west and europe for the bulk of their sales in todays market.

So, I do not see this as any kind of failure on NG2's part, its just the market environment.

But, MS needs to push the title to try to gain long legs.

It seems that unfortunately just about every other Team Ninja game has had a better opening and what seems total sales. If you trust Wikipedia at all, it says that Itagaki, the developer, said the original ninja gaiden only sold 60,000 units its first four months of release and that the games are not targeted towards the Japanese. Now that is obsurb that a game as critically acclaimed as the original was only sells 60,000 in four months, when it sold around 350,000 in NA its first month.

I think what is positive here is that 470,000 copies of Sigma sold to NA and Europe between August 2007 and April 2008. NG2 is well on its way to smashing that amount.

I am not sure why everyone feels disappointed with NG2 sales. The first one might have reached a million units, if NG2 reaches a million it will be a huge success. Remember the gaming market is becoming dominated by casual pick up and play games, your GTA's and Halo's of the world. A game like Ninja Gaiden 2 has to work for its sales, because its aimed at the hardcore of that genre. The casuals of this genre will not take the challenge of NG2 they would rather play God of War that requires no skill in its combat.

True but youre forgetting, MS needs to ship a reasonable amount of copies there, around 70-100k is what is standard for a Ninja Gaiden/DOA game there, or a 360 hit in Japan. This is sad considering over the last few years, the 360 brand there has been growing and something like this couldve pushed up sales for a few weeks too

Trying to argue any X360 games doing well in Japan is a moot point. Would you not agree? X360's games have success in Europe and NA. If we look at Sigma, you will see NG2 is outperforming. We have incomplete data for the original so we can not compare.
You could argue that PS3 did not have the install base, but I would not buy that because, when Sigma came out, the PS3 had nothing, it was in desperate need of games, the only other game on the immediate horizon last summer was Lair and everyone knew from previews that the controls were gonna suck. So, there was no excuse that Sigma should have done more than 40,000 first week in NA. All said and done, close to 250,000 copies total first week is pretty good for this type of game.

27k according to Famitsu, that isnt good considering every other DOA or Ninja Gaiden game has had at least 40k opening.

@ MontanaHatchet

He nailed it, but also, those were the only heavy hitters PS3 had up to that point, everything else was multiplat (that is if you count RFOM and Motorstorm, but they were bundled and the only good titles on the system for a LONG while, and offcourse Lair which is yeah...)

Ninja Gaiden is a hardcore franchise, i think itll have legs, who knows, will it reach a million in its opening 2 months? Mass Effect didnt sell a huge amount on its first week but didnt drop that much and easily reach a million in a few weeks

Not bad 173,000 in NA for 4 days sales and another 42,000 in Europe for 2 days sales. So, 215,000 is not bad, not great but decent. Remember this is not a casual game. Also, I read it had 20,000 in Japan for first day. I think it well have legs, becasue the next big exclusive isn't until Too Humna and thats 2 months from now. So I think NG2 will do well. Lets see what its total for the whole month end up being then we will know how well its going to do.

Had a better first week then Haze. Which is a FPS and that's saying something for a game like NG 2 that appeals to a much smaller crowd then FPS games. So I'd say it's been a decent week for NG 2. Plus don't forget the NA region didn't get the demo till Saturday.

Uncharted was very popular in Europe and somewhat popular in America, having very long legs. Heavenly Sword was bundled, and the Ratchet & Clank series is one known for its legs. Not really an accomplishment to sell faster than those, especially when the PS3 userbase was so very small when these games launched.

@ Chrizum

Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, and Ratchet and Clank all had weaker openings than this but have subsequently reached the million mark. This will definitely get to a million, it just may take a while.

Good first week overall, could be better, but MUCH better than Sigma so far. Hopefully this along with the other hardcore titles will have good legs and sell well overall. Tecmo must be very happy. BTW, when is it releasing in JAP?

Since it was only two days and many places don't stock their games until after a few days (mine didn't), I would imagine at least 60k will be pushed next week.

Either way, that's still disappointing for the last hurrah of the series that defines hardcore gaming. Lets hope US isn't too deep in that stigma yet.

This is EU, hardcore games always sell poorly. With that said, i think this is a game that will have legs, offcourse JAP sales should be high and so should NA

Ever since I beat the original over three years ago (and I beat it another 7 or 8 times after that!) I knew I would get the sequel right away.

However, my only game store in town still doesn't have it. I hope the game still gets great sales next week even if I can't help right now.

I was considering playing this again on 360, but I played the Vita version instead. The extra content in the Sigma releases is decent, but 360 owners aren't missing out on much.

Buy Ninja Gaiden 3. The action in this game is the best from the 3. It is more fast paced and frenetic. The new slide offers Ryu more mobility, allowing the player to chain his attacks to more enemies. The camera is still bad like in NG2. They should get the camera much further in order to allow you to see your surroundings. So gameplay wise is better, but it does less stuff in the other departments, like exploration, collectables and the weapons. The game is really fun, and Hard as ever. I have always had a hard time in "hard" mode in all NG games, and this is no different; it IS HARD. The good thing is that this time around the checkpoint system is more friendly :D.

The game is Good, it is not a good as NG:B/S, or NG2/S2; but is not a bad game!!!! Ninja Gaiden fans should give it at least a try and stop hearing the damn reviews!!!

I really need to get this game. I adored Ninja Gaiden Black on the original xbox. It's definitely the coolest hack and slash I ever had the pleasure of playing.
