I actually loved this game, self and my bro played through the whole thing co op over xbl and got every achievement in the game, if you have the unstoppable achievements on your xbox live profile I tip my hat to you, this is one tough nut to finish without dying but damn rewarding game if you get into it.

Just a shame it was meant to be a trilogy originally so the game ends on a fairly class cliffhanger which will never be resolved.... will never get to fight that giant mech shown in the ending... depressing.

For the record, they didn't actually spend 10 years creating this game. A PS1 game was in the works and got scraped. A Gamecube game was in the works but got scraped. MS bought rights in 2005 and the game was released in 2009. Hence, they spent like 3 years creating THIS game.

@ Gilgamesh:
Dude.... no, no, and no.

Think about what you're saying, $80 million? who would have given Silicon Knights that kind of money, for one game? that's preposterous, and utter bullocks.

In truth, they were making a Too human for PS1, the game was in development, but then got shelved when SK began working on Eternal Darkenss. After that, the only think ever shown was a CG trailer they made for Gamecube. Too Human on 360 is an entirely different game. Those points were made in the EGM TH cover story, and in TH's IGN blog.

On 360, the game was in development for 4 years (started in 2004 I believe). There's no way Microsoft would have given them 80 Million upfornt, thats not how publishing contracts work, you have to hit milestones to get paid.

@ oni-link:
Dude, the only person who factually knows how long TH was in development is Denis Dyack. The fact that you're trying to argue what the creator of the game says, is hilarious.

@Nebulous, Too Human was in development for almost 10 years. It was originally planed for the PSOne. It cost roughly $80 million to make which was funded all by Microsoft.

In order to break even they'll have to sell around 3.5 million copies.
Message | Report
Nebulous posted 28/11/2009, 03:37
@ Boniitis: 3 million? haha, give me a break. Thats like $180,000,000.

Actually, Silicon Knight's court documents say they had to negotiate a less favorable deal with MS after the Unreal Engine fiasco. I doubt it cost more than 30,000,000 tops. It was only in development for 4 years.

Anyways, great but flawed game. Excellent beginning to the story, incredible art direction, and a solid, unique and fun combat system, with very addictive Diablo-style looting. Probably still the best definition of an action/ RPG game I've played today.

ACE - they did spend money to make UE3... But that's what they do. Even if they didn't make GeoW UE3 would still exist. Obviously they didn't need to create the engine for the game because the tech already existed. That they already made and were selling to make their money back for their work. Do you not understand how much time and money they saved by using their own pre-made engine?

and in fact Silicon Knights is suing Epic because they licensed the engine and it didn't work for them. So they decided to create their own engine... how much resources went with that? They spent money on the license... tried to implement the engine... didn't work for them so they scrapped it and builkt their own from the ground up.

Sound like a huge money hole for just that.

ACE - GeoW only cost 10,000,000 because EPIC used their Unreal Engine... You know... the one that cost 0 dollars to make because it was already made.... and cost 0 dollars to license because Epic owns the engine...

Big cost reduction just for that.

Also gears had huge advertising. Would be nice to know how much that ran... Halo 3 spent 10mil on TV alone.

either way 350k is not what this game needed and expected to sell. Almost certainly heavily in loss atm due to the engine issues which plagued the game and wasted a lot of cash which would have been better spent on doing 4 player coop which would have resulted in better reviews and more sales.

Hopefully this can hit 500k but even that is unlikely now.

Lets not beat around the bush, this game was expecting 1m+ sales and is not going to get it.

it is all about the budget, MS spent only 10 000 000 on Gears of War. U think they spent more on Too Human? Hell I think no.
Anyway, publishers said that 200 000 is enough to repaid for a game with average budget and advertising. Trust me I know what I talking about.
And look at Too Human. It has very cheap production values, exept music and story(wich cut into 3 games), so I dont think this game had even 10 000 000 bucks budget.
Message | Report
kuddles posted 05/10/2008, 01:56
Sorry ACE, but you're mistaken. The average budget for a next-gen game is around 20 million. Hard to know for sure since like movie studios most publishers don't like talking about costs, something you would know if you actually worked in the gaming industry.

Regardless, that's the estimate for titles like BioShock and The Darkness so let's go with that. Even though the game licensed the Unreal 3 engine and then built it's own from scratch, so right off that bat an "average" budget is highly unlikely.

Let's do the math. $60 x 330k = 19.8 million dollars. This doesn't even take into account the cut the retailers get, or the advertising costs, or the production and printing costs. So even in the best case scenario, the game wouldn't have broken even.

I'm pretty sure those in the actual gaming industry can not only read and write (I'm relatively certain you are unaware of what "Epic Fail" means since you use it completely out of context) but would understand that developers can in fact develop more than one game at a time.

Secondly, why do you require Denis Dyack to say it is so for it to be so? I have no doubt he has no desire to admit his pet project was such an albatross. Admitting it has such a massive budget would be a tacit admission of its failure.

Or perhaps I'll put it in language you'll understand. Big company make bad game for these many years (holds up 9 fingers) big booboo on wallet EPIC FAIL.

To think, the game has been in production longer than some of the gamers who bought it have been alive. I'm amazed they've only spent $100,000,000, I would have thought it closer to 150. For development to have spanned 4 consoles (PSX, PS2, GC, 360), and so essentially is 4 separately developed games, the price could have been higher. Having played the end product, I just don't understand what took them so long.

Are you suggesting that they showed the game off five years in advance?

Halo 2 isn't anywhere near the biggest development project in history, lets not be thick.

Shenmue cost somewhere in the neighborhood of 70 million dollars according to Sega, and it was only in development from 1995 or 1996 to 2000, on two consoles, which is somewhat less than 1997 or 1998 to 2008 across three consoles. So the price isn't that ridiculous.

I think people were expecting Too Human to be something else, but why not just enjoy it for what it is? It's finally here, and you can clearly see the little touches of detail everywhere in the game (notice the walking animation when you push the stick a little, then stop, then repush... That's the first thing I notice in a game most of the time).

I can't wait for the sequel, and let's hope for the best this time around!

Love the game, it has received far to much hate, when it actually is a pretty good game. Its, like a Diablo but with futuristic guns and an interesting melee control mechanic.

I would not read to much into the sales for Europe....that represents one day sales figures. I expect this title to have legs and be a steady seller, but it won't sell millions.

If MS and SK are smart, this game screams of DLC like what NG2 got with the Mission Mode content.

Anyways, highly addicting and fun game.

I hope not. If it will make past 500k there might be a chance for at least one sequel.

I must convincing some people immediately to buy this game...

I actually loved this game, self and my bro played through the whole thing co op over xbl and got every achievement in the game, if you have the unstoppable achievements on your xbox live profile I tip my hat to you, this is one tough nut to finish without dying but damn rewarding game if you get into it.

Just a shame it was meant to be a trilogy originally so the game ends on a fairly class cliffhanger which will never be resolved.... will never get to fight that giant mech shown in the ending... depressing.

If they had made this 4 player coop and let you trade the loot with some sort of auction house this would have been amazing

very sad!!!

LOL..this shovelware does not look like a game that took 3 years to create. It's sad when Silicon Knights actually took a decade to create this dissapointment which probably lead to their demise. I got it for $5 during the time fry's was clearing their stock and it's what it is worth in my opinion.
