Another adjustment down. While initial sales were really good, MadWorld has seen cumulative downward adjustments of over 50k already.

Time to admit it: it's a flop.

With madworld, HOTD: Overkill, The Conduit, Resident evil franchise, Dead Space, Silent hill, Cursed Mountain and some other games like this we can say that 2009 'll be a Hardcore year, but without forgetting the casual games as well. So, 2009 'll be a great year for wii gamers.
Speaking about madworld, I think this game 'll sell at least between 500k and 700k trough the next months. Just get patience. Wii games usually runs slow, but a lot continues selling a lot of months after be realased.

naruto3336 how isn't this a niche game? It's not exactly a ultra niche game like Little King Story, but it one because how many people who own a Wii would actually think of this as there style of game? Not many adults (like 40+) who brought the Wii for things like Wii Fit and Mario Kart, no little kids like 10 year olds ( because most parents won't buy it for them). And not even some people within the most likely age group of buying the game (15-30 years). One of friends who's 17 and owns a Wii doesn't want this, he says it's not his type of game and would rather by COD:WaW instead. So how isn't this a niche game, if it wasn't it would to everyone (or at least a lot more people). No more heroes is another example of this, although the sales actually caught on for it.

Oh, and for the 200K celebrators: according to the sales history graph its on 193 odd K, so this is a generous upwards rounding (unlike the VC sales page where it has a mean downwards rounding). 200K for sure after week 9 sales posted; unless adjusted upwards beforehand.

I can't explain how people expected this game to sell millions. Is boring and repetitive and the only good points are the presentation and art direction. But the game is highly mediocre and tedious. Is strictly a niche game, like Okami and Viewtiful joe. Please stop using it as a meter for wii mature games. Is just unrealistic. The wii had great games. This is not one of them.

this is not a game to make 400k in the first month and then die :), this is a game to have looooooooooong legs. A lot of games in the Wii did the same numbers and got 1 million with the time. And remember, this game is very very expensive (I don't got my copy because this game is expensive ¬¬), the game probably already gave a profit just because of the price

This talk of profits and whatnot seems ridiculous. We have no figures. How can you tie any profits to units sold without concrete development/marketing budget information? Anything is speculation.

My guess is that the game did not cost a great deal of money to produce. If I remember correctly, Madworld was without a publisher for a short time before Sega picked up the deal with Platinum Games in distribution. So that would imply that Platinum probably put in a fair amount of work with their own funds without the aide of Sega and considering that it's a fledgling new studio, I can't imagine that they'd pour millions upon millions into Madworld.

These sales are very mediocre and I think that's about all you can say about them. They aren't putrid, but for a console that's starving for hardcore content according to many publications, this is not the kind of response you would expect.

180k sold so far.
If $8.5m was the creation cost...($39.99 x 180,000) = $7.2m

After nearly 2 months, it would've made 85% of its cost back. Sounds good to me.

With forseeable legs of at least 4k a week worldwide for the next 4 months (17 weeks), it is a guaranteed profit.

@puffy

OK, I'll play ball. I haven't played the game, but from what I have heard, quality costs money.

Say it was $6m MAX to make, advertising could've been reduced be being coupled with House of The Dead: Overkill; $1.25m advertising in each territory, that is 2/5 of the games dev cost.

.....I get $8.5m lol, the cost I said for strictly development. Can we agree on $8.5m (give or take a couple $100k)?
Message | Report
puffy posted 29/04/2009, 01:26
Have you played the game SaviourX? It would have cost $6 Million MAX in dev costs.

$8.5 Million is nearly half of Mario Galaxy's budget and that was in development for 3 years at least. MadWorld had between 12 - 18 months with a small team.

All up Sega would not have spent over $10 Million on this game, marketing costs included

Sega advertised this in Europe and America, and the only figure I know concerning advertising is $2m per territory.

Do you really think this game only cost 5 million? Please. Despite lower Wii dev costs, this game requires more work than normal shovelware stuff. Good games aren't cheap. I stand by my $8.5m for pure dev work, and Sega's (the publisher) advertising of $4m.

14 dollars profit per copy is bullshit, and you know it. The game is selling for $50, so Sega is making at least $20 per copy.

Development and marketing costs combined should be around 7 million, that means Sega must sell around 350k to break even.

TWRoO:
HD games cost 10-20M on average nowadays, whereas only a big game on Wii (SMG) will reach 15-20M.
PS2 games costed 5-8M in 2005, thus I think we can assume about 7-8M between development and marketing. At 14 dollars profit for the publisher per copy, that means a 500-570k sales at full price to break even. It looks like it will take some time to go into the black.
Message | Report
naruto3336 posted 28/04/2009, 01:35

Ha what... 10 million for this.

Bullshit.

The average cost of a HD game is probably about 10 million. The average of a Wii game is like 2 million (similar to last gen... although it would be higher if Devs were making more of an effort)

My bet i this is about average costing, although the marketing was ok, so that probably equals development costs itself.

I'd say $5 million total to develop AND market this game.

Madworld was barely shown on tv. I only saw One Madworld commercial. While i see about 8 Killzone 2 and Fallout 3 commercials a day. And about 12 "Petz" related and carnival frenzy shovel ware games each night. I don't know whats wrong with Nintendo. They NEED to support games like Madworld more, like how they try to sell the crap out of shovel ware. No wonder these sales are low.

Call of Duty: World at War had the same sales as this game when it was at 3 weeks. The only bright thing that this game shows me is that this game is selling more in Others than No More Heroes did. But then No More Heroes sold way more in America than Others. This will outsell No More Heroes also considering that No More Heroes was released in Japan while this was not.

This game will last through 300K at least, maybe 350K. I don't think it'll ever hit 500K, because its not going to have "shelf legs" -- people will have to seek it out to buy it after not too much longer.

Lots of legs titles on the Wii just stay on the shelf at retailers, and sell by nature of being available. I don't think the situation is the same for this one.

350K will be okay though.

This game is starting to be more popular in "Others" than North America. It opened fairly well in the US but has dropped. "Others" didn't open that well, only about half of NA but has stayed consistent through the first four weeks.

It is showing some legs though and will eventually hit a half million. Not too bad for a new property and one that is very hardcore and unique.

I thought there were rumours going around that NPD said it sold about 70k in March.
Thats roughly the first 3 weeks, which we have at about 83k.
The general rule is vgchartz is 10% bigger than npd because of Canada, so 70*1.1 is 77k

77k and 83 k are very similar.
I may be wrong about the 70k though, im not sure if it was genuine.

scottie posted 17/04/2009, 05:54
You may have to run that one by us again hyperion. Possibly with a link. As far as I can tell, all the NPD results say is that it sold less than 205k in the USA.

We have it at 100k for USA+the rest of America for March and part of April

Madworld, a new IP and a somewhat niche title, has sold about 97,000 in the first 3 weeks (we'll see if this is adjusted and in what direction after NPD numbers come out).
House of the Dead:Overkill (with admittedly better legs than Madworld so far, or so it looks), a game from a known IP, sold roughly 107,000 in the first 3 weeks, not that much of a difference. So it makes sense that so far Sega are not lying and are ok with Madworld sales numbers (though of course I am sure they would have preferred more).

This game had a better launch and Week 2 COMBINED sales than HotD. If HoTD has met expectations( assumingly they now go into profit) it means that madworld will soon go into profit maybe after 300k considering it has a higher production cost. We all know it will grow higher than 300k and possibly 500k so it is a hit. If No More Heroes can get a sequel at 400k in sales then why can't MadWorld get a sequel in 500k even if MadWorld cost more to make?

A lot of things going against it, but we should wait a bit before calling it a flop.

Wii is known as a casual console. You all need to know that.

I also heard that if you copy a game onto a DVD format disc, the Wii can play it o.O. My friend said he will give me a DVD disc of Madworld to try it out. If it works, that could be a major reason. Also, Sega doesn't really advert games that much, but I have seen magazine ads of it.

Reason why this game is low on sales is: Major competition. Dead Rising, Sonic and Black Knight, house of the Dead Overkill, Tenchu. Though I admit that MadWorld is a way better game than these games, but not everyone might think that and might want to buy the other game. So considering that, MadWorld sold considerable well.

You can't find Wii owners at fault when they don't find a particular game interesting. Blame developers who don't take the time to actually research and see what type of game will sell or why buyers like particular games. Just because they put out a violent game doesn't mean those that want more hardcore games should buy it just because. I only buy games that I find interesting not because they find someone elses definition of "Mature".

I am buying this game soon. But here in canada, the price of the game is HIGH! 59.99. My parents hesitate to buy me a 50 buck game so how will they let me buy a 60 buck game which will ultimately cost 70 bux with tax and warranty. Im waiting for a 5 buck price drop or some kind of deal. Then Ill buy it but Im definitely not missing an awesome gem like this from my collection.

I don't think the reason for this game not selling is the fact that its a "hardcore" game or even an M rated game as jeffrey is rambling about. Remember, RE4 has done really well on Wii, so the fanbase DOES exist for the Wii.

I think the game has two big things going against it. One, it's a new IP, and two, the game is way too short. I beat it in like 4 hours. That's not to say it's a bad game, it just left a lot more to be desired.

I still see it selling well in the long run thanks to those wonderful "legs" games exhibit in their later weeks.

I think everyone who doesn't buy this game who owns a wii in the next 30days needs to be beat'en over the head with a wii-fit balance bord, funny how it's one of the "MOST POPULAR" games and knowone buys it I guess I'm one of the few wii owners who actually has a job to buy games and a ton of people run out to buy mario power tennis when I already owned the game YEARS ago and I'd rather buy vertua tennis cause at least its something new and guess what else????? It goes online and it's better then mario tennis.......... I think sega should just stop printing madworld on wii "if they already haven't" and put it on 360 cause it's nentendo's job to find a hardcore audience and who ever tries to do that will probably lose 50billion$ trying to do that alone..........

unfortunately with the kind of people who own a wii I wouldn't be surprised if not only this game flopped and the conduit was cancelled completely but I'm really starting to think my gamecube had better games then my wii seriously it's getting that bad + my wii is worth over 450$ because of my VC downloads so I can't just trade my wii in so I don't know I guess I'm just going to give it away or something because I don't think the wii is ever going to have more then 2good games a year and It's never going to be anything like the other 2 consoles......... If you don't get or own this game then your a fuckhead and I really needed to throw that out there because I guess everyone besides me who owns a wii don't know good games.........

lol at all the people who expected huge sales.

Most wii owners are too young to be allowed to buy it, too old to care, or are women (and women don't like violent games as much as guys)

Well Call of Duty WAW sold 44,000 first week in the Us, and 17,000 first week in Others. Look at it now, its over 1 million.

Im not saying this will do that well, im just saying people need to stop saying wii games dont sell after 2 weeks. try waiting till at least a month and then you can se if its selling or not.

More proof that hardcore games do not sell on Wii. This is not just random at this point, this is a proven trend. Only well known remakes, ala RE4, and Nintendo games do well on this platform. It's safe to say that the hardcore audience is almost entirely buying PS360 games. It's just a fact. The hardcore seem willing to cross over to buy Nintendo games for the Wii, but that's it.

More correctly the sales were divided between 1st and 2nd Week because the game was out mid week in NTSC and PAL regions.

Anyway no big deal the sales pattern is good thas far lets see after 1 week if it keeps this legs of 30k a week.

DOLBY,
We don't just throw our money away to "support" anything. If they wanted my money they shouldn't have made a game that I can beat in 5 hours with little enough replay value to warrant a purchase. A rent is all it will get from me.

First off if anyone is RENTING this game then we can thank you for not supporting this quality 3rd party hardcore title.

For anyone thinking about getting this game I can agree that the game is just insanely fun. There are a variety of ways to play the game and the levels and enemies are quite different from section to section. The sub bosses in each level are my favorite part since they just keep popping up until you fight the boss. The boss fights are fun, challenging, and really help put closure to the level. All enemies including bosses are so detailed that half the time you will want to just stare at the screen in awe ;)

Music is different and original but really fits the theme well.
Voice acting is very well done and the story is actually really good for a brawler action game.

The controls are solid and do not get in the way. You can play the game slowly by racking up combos on single enemies or you can just go buck wild and rip through enemies as fast as possible.

At first the game can be slow and easy for veteran gamers but the later levels start to kick up the challenge. Also after you beat the game you unlock more weapons and a Hard Mode which is quite challenging.

The graphics and style of the game are unbelievable and very easy to follow. The pictures do not do the game justice, it looks even better in motion which is hard to believe since it looks amazing in the screens.

Finally the game is just a good time ripping through mobs of people. Toss in the great sub boss fights, bloodbath challenges, and unique boss fights and you have a great game. Well worth the price!
